This role requires someone who can handle feedback constructively, adapt to high-pressure situations, and deliver results from day one.

Attendance at occasional in-person meetups in Chicago/Midwest is required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Architect, develop, and maintain robust, scalable server-side applications using Node.js and Express.

  • Design and implement APIs, including RESTful services and integrations with external systems.

  • Lead discussions on backend architecture, including refactoring monolithic APIs into microservices or serverless systems.

  • Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize performance for mission-critical applications.

  • Design and manage databases, focusing on MongoDB, Postgres, and data ingestion pipelines.

  • Implement SOC2-compliant solutions, ensuring robust security and data integrity.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate front-end and back-end components.

  • Provide technical leadership, conduct code reviews, and mentor junior developers.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 10+ years of backend development experience (or 8 years with a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field).

  • Proficiency in JavaScript and TypeScript for server-side development.

  • Extensive hands-on experience with AWS services such as EC2, S3, Lambda, and RDS.

  • Expertise in MongoDB and database design, including data ingestion and warehouse solutions.

  • Strong understanding of security and performance best practices, including HIPAA and SOC2 compliance.

  • Deep experience in building and consuming RESTful APIs.

  • Ability to independently set up and configure AWS services without DevOps support.

  • Proven ability to handle high-pressure situations and complex technical challenges.

  • Experience in designing and leading the implementation of complex features from top to bottom, including architecture, decision-making, and code execution.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and excellent communication abilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with microservices architectures and serverless solutions.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated deployments.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., Postgres, MongoDB).
  • Experience working in both monolithic and microservice architectures.
  • Understanding of DevOps practices and the ability to function in a DevOps-light environment.
  • Experience in the healthcare or startup industries.
  • Ability to confidently articulate opinions on complex backend topics and adapt based on constructive feedback.

TECH STACK:

  • Frontend: React, Redux Toolkit, TypeScript, MUI, Bootstrap
  • Backend: Node.js, Express, Mongoose, TypeScript
  • Database: MongoDB (Atlas), Postgres (AWS RDS)
  • AWS Services: EC2, S3, Lambda, Glue, RDS
  • CI/CD: CircleCI
  • Monitoring: Sentry, CloudWatch

ABOUT YOU:

  • You’re a seasoned developer with deep expertise in backend technologies and architecture.
  • You can work independently with minimal guidance and deliver results quickly.
  • You thrive in challenging environments and can navigate high-stakes scenarios with confidence.
  • You excel at receiving and incorporating feedback without resistance.
  • You have strong opinions on backend best practices but are open to constructive feedback and collaborative problem-solving.
  • You are capable of jumping into a complex codebase and contributing effectively from day one.
  • You value collaboration, clear communication, and supporting the overall team’s success
